Dr. Amanda Lorenz
Thanks for visiting! Life’s journey can be difficult and it is my privilege and honor to help guide you through these times. Together we will explore and understand the impact of past and current experiences on your mood and behavior. We will then use this knowledge to develop skills to help you lead a healthier and happier life. Often my clients are struggling with trauma, addictions, or other intense emotions or distressing behaviors stemming from depression, anxiety, or personality disorders. Adopting a holistic approach toward wellness, I integrate a developmental perspective with techniques from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Mindfulness, Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and Prolonged Exposure (PE).
Recognizing the impact of relationships on our lives, I also offer couples and family counseling to identify and change negative interactions. Using effective techniques from Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT), Gottman's Method of Relationship Therapy, and PREP couples work, my clients achieve positive, meaningful, and secure relationships with others. I also offer premarital counseling as a form of preventative medicine for relationships.

I have conducted individual, family, and group therapy and assessments with adults, adolescents, and children across many settings including private practices, veteran’s hospitals, training-clinics, in- and out-patient psychiatric hospitals, schools, jails, and prisons. In addition, I have published several book chapters and articles examining the influence of emotions on a person’s thoughts and behaviors. After many years in private practice in Atlanta, Georgia, I returned home to Chicago where I served as the Director of a young adult and adult partial hospitalization program and of a university training clinic. In my heart, though, I missed working directly with clients who inspire me daily. Now, drawing upon my nearly 20 years of experience in clinical, research, teaching and administrative roles, I am thrilled to be providing effective therapy to clients with a wide range of concerns and problems.
