Dr. Lauren Vanhusen

The choice to seek therapy is a courageous and oftentimes not an easy one. However, this choice demonstrates that you have insight that life is not going the way you would like or perhaps your strategies for dealing with life’s challenges are not working. Together, we will focus on the workability of your current strategies for managing painful emotions and thoughts. As your therapist, my role is to walk alongside you as we discover workable solutions. We may also explore how your past experiences, current thought patterns, relationship to your internal experiences, and cultural context influence how you are feeling.

My approach to therapy is informed by my training in evidence based practices as well as health psychology. With a focus on both mind and body wellness, I integrate techniques from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and mindfulness approaches. I often utilize body focused techniques to manage stress and anxiety (e.g., mindfulness and relaxation strategies).  Furthermore, I am trained in therapies for trauma including Cognitive Processing Therapy and Prolonged Exposure Therapy. I also have significant experience working with individuals who are struggling to manage chronic health conditions including chronic pain, Diabetes, insomnia, or adjusting to a new medical diagnosis.

I am a second year Postdoctoral Resident at Balanced Awakening. This means that I've graduated with my doctorate degree, have several years of clinical experience, and am awaiting licensure. I am supervised by Dr. Lorenz and Dr. Sido.

I have had the opportunity to work with individuals from various backgrounds and in different settings including community mental health, college counseling centers, rehabilitation centers, and Veteran’s Affairs hospitals. I have received training in evidence based approaches for various concerns including anxiety, depression, post traumatic stress, chronic pain, insomnia, substance use, and adjustment to a medical diagnosis. Specifically, I have training in mind-body approaches including biofeedback, mindfulness, and relaxation techniques. I recently completed a year of postdoctoral training at the Clement J. Zablocki Veteran’s affairs medical center and will be supervised as a post doctoral trainee here at Balanced Awakening as I await licensure.
